Under the theme “Transcontinental Partnership for the Reparation of Africans and People of African Descent”, the meeting will promote a unified approach to shared challenges.
Caricom Secretary General Carla Barnett, the Presidents of Angola, João Lourenço, of the Saharawi Arab Republic, Brahim Ghali, of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, will participate in the opening ceremony.
Likewise, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, and the Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, among other guests.
For Barnett, the summit represents a historic milestone in promoting cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean, particularly in trade, health and reparations.
Regarding reparations, the Caribbean leader explained that historically, the reality is that a large part of the region’s population are the descendants of Africans transported as slaves across the Atlantic Ocean.
She detailed that the colonial experience in the Caribbean and Africa is the main reason for the lagging development compared to the developed world.
