The meeting was initiated by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The topics discussed include threats to the multipolar world order and the association’s joint response to US tariffs and sanctions.
“Cooperation issues among BRICS member countries in trade, economics, finance, investment, and other areas were discussed, taking into account the current situation in the global economy,” the Kremlin reported on its website.
The BRICS was founded in 2006. South Africa joined the original group (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) in 2011.
Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia became full members of the association on January 1, 2024. Indonesia joined the group on January 6, 2025.
