Referring to the current global situation, Türk urged States to act to end crises and conflicts and asserted that norms are crumbling.

“No one is safe when rights are under attack,” he said, deploring the constant dissemination of pro-war propaganda.

He also stressed the importance of respecting the multilateral agreements that constitute “the basis of peace, world order and our daily lives”.

Speaking at a new session of the Human Rights Council, he denounced the violation of rules agreed upon to prevent wars and the non-compliance with legal provisions.

Türk condemned the illegal detention of UN personnel in Yemen, the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement and international organizations, and the withdrawal of Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland from the Ottawa Treaty on anti-personnel mines.

He also lamented the tendency to belittle the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, agreed upon by all countries a decade ago.

He also pointed out that Gaza became a graveyard after Israel’s mass killing of Palestinian civilians.
