President Javier Milei rejected the Law on University Financing and Salary Reinstatement for Teachers and Non-Teaching Staff, which was approved by Congress on August 21 by a large margin, pointing to new clashes with legislators and street protests.
In fact, higher education union members announced that they will also hold a massive demonstration, which they plan to hold when Congress decides to debate the repeal of the executive veto.
Milei’s decision revoked the initiative that included calling for negotiations for a new labor agreement to restore teaching and non-teaching salaries in line with inflation, as they have been frozen since early 2024.
The Executive decree will trigger a new escalation in the conflict with the education sector and the congressional opposition, because it comes amid tensions between the government and universities over budget cuts.
