On September 11, 1973, the army, with the support of the oligarchy, right-wing political parties, and the endorsement of the United States, put an end to a process of transformation led by then-President Salvador Allende.
During the uprising, the president and several of his aides lost their lives, and a period of repression began that, for 17 years, left more than 40,000 people detained, extrajudicially executed, and tortured, without counting some 200,000 exiled.
To commemorate the anniversary, President Gabriel Boric will lead an event at the Patio de Los Naranjos at La Moneda Palace, along with human rights organizations, civil society representatives, and Government and state officials.
A pilgrimage will also be held in the facade of the University of Santiago and a march to the National Stadium, which was a concentration camp during the first months of Augusto Pinochet’s regime (1973-1990).
