Dominican Republic and Panama sign environmental agreement

Santo Domingo, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) The Dominican Republic and Panama signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the face of climate change challenges, the Ministry of the Environment reported today.

The Ministry pointed out that the signing took place in the context of the Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD), based in Panama.

The document was signed by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Paino Henriquez, and his Panamanian counterpart, Juan Carlos Navarro, with the presence of representatives from the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

The memorandum establishes a framework for technical and political collaboration in key areas such as climate change, including governance, adaptation, mitigation, financing, risk management and carbon markets.

Other areas include forest management and biodiversity -ecosystem restoration, sustainable watershed management, water protection, forest fire prevention and response capacity building; and the circular economy, through actions against plastic pollution and solid waste management. Henriquez stressed that the agreement places both countries at the forefront of regional climate action, especially on issues such as carbon markets, which are critical for mitigation and adaptation policies.
