According to official figures, from 2014 to 2023, the remains of more than 930 martyrs of the VPCh were returned to China.
In 2014, China published for the first time a verified list of 197,000 martyrs of the Chinese people and built a monument in Shenyang with the names of each carved on 138 pieces of gold-black granite to honor their loyalty.
In 2019, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that the repatriation is part of efforts to heal the wounds of the war and is a message in favor of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The Korean War, which ended with an armistice, is remembered as one of the bloodiest in the region, leaving at least three million civilians dead, including 15 percent of the population of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
