Traffic accident fatalities increase in El Salvador

San Salvador, Sept 15 (Prensa Latina) The number of traffic fatalities in El Salvador has increased so far in 2025, with motorcyclists accounting for the most deaths, statistics show.

In a country with a vehicle fleet of 1,971,000 units, of which 665,372 are motorcycles (33,76%), and in a territory of just 21,000 square kilometers, the accident rate is a concern for authorities.

In this context, the increase in motorcycles and fatalities is notable, even though it is now common for the media to report the death of a motorcyclist in accidents daily, often due to irresponsible driving.

According to authorities, the main causes of death in road accidents are driver distraction, excessive speed, and lane invasion. More than 800 people have died in accidents so far in 2025, according to statistics from the National Road Safety Observatory (Onasevi), which is managed by the Fund for Assistance to Victims of Traffic Accidents (Fonat).
