A baseball game on the grounds of Milenium Hotel, in the municipality of Viana, Luanda, was the pretext that brought together the Association of Angolan Alumni in Cuba, Caimaneros; collaborators of the Antex Angola company; members of the Caribbean nation’s diplomatic mission; and Cuban residents.
It was a great celebration of Cubanness where, according to the president of the board of directors of the Caimaneros, Jose Alvaro, the important thing more than the game scores was to continue strengthening the bonds of brotherhood between both peoples.
“We commemorate the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence and the 50 years of relations between the two countries. It couldn’t be any other way. Cuba is a sister country, it’s also our homeland for us Caimaneros,” he told Prensa Latina.
In the match, which was attended by Cuban ambassador Oscar Leon, the Caimaneros won; first against Antex, by a score of 10 to 4 runs, and then in a second match against the collaborators of Camama General Hospital (6-5).
“What is learned well is never forgotten,” said Alvaro, who noted that many on the island learned baseball while studying in Cuba and added that this is not the first time they have participated in team sports, as they have already participated in soccer and basketball.
This Saturday’s meeting also had another motivation: the 65th anniversary of the Caribbean nation’s largest mass organization: the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), which is celebrated on September 28.
“It was just like we were in Cuba. Even when we arrived, we had caldosa, which is typical at the CDR party, just like we were in our second home,” said the president of the Caimaneros.
