Peru: Repression denounced, respect demanded for youth protests

Lima, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) Peru's National Coordinator of Human Rights (Cnddhh) condemned the repression of anti-government protests by the Generation Z youth movement, which is demanding citizen security and other demands.

In an assessment of the fourth day of protests by the online movement, the Coordinator reported that yesterday’s mobilization left 18 people injured, including a journalist and a medical aid worker.

After condemning yesterday’s repression, it also considered it urgent that authorities provide guarantees for a safe protest at the fifth protest called for tonight by Generation Z, given that the previous day’s march also left a police officer with first-degree burns, according to a report from the National Police (PNP).

In a video of last night’s riots, a voice can be heard saying “we’re going to burn” a police officer, and one of the protesters accuses the person who spoke of being an infiltrated undercover police officer as a provocateur. The instigator that fled was pursued by several protesters.

The National Police of Peru (PNP) denounced the indiscriminate use of tear gas by officers of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) against protesters, which violates the right to peaceful protest.

The deployment of forces against the protest failed to prevent the marchers from advancing from Plaza San Martin to the vicinity of the Legislative Palace, where police action intensified to prevent them from reaching Parliament.

Various sources report that the police, to disperse the protesters, fired plastic pellets and tear gas grenades horizontally, which is contrary to police regulations on the use of these means.

Last night’s mobilization included sectors such as transportation workers.
