Chile: Silvio Rodriguez opens series of performances

Santiago, Chile, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, founder of the Cuban Nueva Trova Movement, will open on Monday the first of his four concerts in Chile, eagerly awaited by an audience who wants to hear his songs again.

Silvio returns to this country seven years after his last performance there, where tickets for the Movistar Arena Theater with a capacity of 17,000 people, have been sold out for several months.

The author of renowned songs such as “Ojala,” “Te Doy Una Cancion,” “La Maza,” “La Era Esta Pariendo Un Corazon,” y “Santiago de Chile,” will offer a repertoire from his most iconic pieces to those from his recent album “Quiero Saber.”

Silvio has a deep connection with Chile. This was the first Latin American country the musician and composer visited in 1972 during the Unidad Popular (Popular Unity-UP) government of President Salvador Allende.

After the 1973 coup d’etat and during the 17 years of dictatorship, his songs and poetry accompanied many in their toughest moments, singer and actress Carmen Prieto recently said.

After the restoration of democracy in 1990, he performed a concert at the National Stadium, one of the most crowded events, to which nearly 80,000 people attended.

Since then, he has repeatedly returned to Chile, most recently in 2018 when he also performed at the Movistar Arena Theater.

The legendary Cuban artist invited musician Manuel Garcia to sing at tonight’s concert. Others, such as Illapu, Patricio Anabalon, and Nano Stern, will sing with Silvio in subsequent performances.
