Ecuador: More than 140 rights violations reported during protests

Quito, Oct 1 (Prensa Latina) The Alliance of Human Rights Organizations reported a total of 143 rights violations in the context of the strike that continues in Ecuador for its tenth day, with protests against the policies of the Daniel Noboa government.

The group has so far recorded 92 people injured, 100 detained, and 10 temporarily missing, as well as one death: Kichwa community member Efrain Fueres.

Among those detained, 12 were sent to pretrial detention after being charged with terrorism. Their families held a protest this morning outside the National Assembly (Parliament), where they demanded the release of their loved ones.

Leaders of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), the organization promoting the national strike against the elimination of the diesel subsidy and other measures, appeared this Tuesday before the Legislative Commission on Constitutional Guarantees and Human Rights.

There, Marlon Vargas, head of CONAIE, asked legislators to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Ministers of Defense, Gian Carlo Loffredo, and of the Interior, John Reimberg, for their alleged responsibility in the violence during the demonstrations.

Demonstrations and roadblocks have taken place in different parts of the country, primarily in the northern Ecuadorian highlands, in recent days.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for refraining from any form of violence in the context of the protests in Ecuador and reiterated “the importance of resolving disputes through inclusive talks.”
