WHO demands end to war in Gaza and denounces high death toll

Ramallah, Oct 3 (Prensa Latina) The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called for an end to the Israeli aggression against Gaza, after noting that more than 66,000 Palestinians have died there due to the conflict.

Almost 170,000 more were injured during the two years of war, the official said on the social media platform X, out of which, 25 percent have life-changing injuries, requiring immediate and ongoing rehabilitation.

Ghebreyesus called on “all parties to this conflict to choose peace,” amid a large-scale Israeli army offensive against Gaza City.

Shortly before, also on X, the WHO chief condemned the death of a therapist and the injuries to a physiotherapist and an orthopedic surgeon in an Israeli attack on the coastal enclave.

“I mention their professions because I spoke today of the urgent need for this specialized care for the thousands of wounded Gazans,” he said.

In this regard, he asserted that every loss of a medical worker is a tragedy for their families, their colleagues, and the people they will never be able to help.

In the last two years, we have verified more than 1,700 attacks on health facilities in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths and 1,800 injuries, he denounced.
