This figure was released by the Fogo Cruzado Institute, which compiles data on armed violence and conducted a survey in the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belém, and Recife.
The study analyzed statistics from 57 municipalities that make up these urban regions.
Of that total number of victims, 32 died and 138 were injured, many of them during police operations.
Reported cases increased eight percent compared to the period from January to September 2024, when 158 people were hit by unknown gunfire.
Of the 170 cases recorded this year, more than half (51%) were reported in the Rio Metropolitan Region, with a total of 86 people.
Experts point out that organized crime and the excessive circulation of weapons exacerbate this situation. Regarding the origin of the incidents, 41% of the people were shot during police actions, with a total of 69 victims in this segment.
Another 32 were hit in clashes between armed groups.
Fogo Cruzado considers victims of stray bullets to be those killed or wounded in situations in which they had no involvement or influence over the shooting.
