Damage assessed on Japan’s Izu Islands after two typhoons hit

Tokyo, Oct 15 (Prensa Latina) Japanese authorities are assessing the damage caused by two successive typhoons that recently hit Hachijojima, Tokyo, and damaged more than 200 homes.

Typhoons Halong and Nakri brought heavy rains and winds to the Izu Island chain in the Pacific, which includes Hachijojima and is part of Tokyo Prefecture, a city located about 120 kilometers southeast of Tokyo.

Reported damage includes hundreds of torn-off roofs and extensive loss of personal belongings due to flooding.

Halong unleashed record rainfall, and the population barely had time to recover from the weekend’s storm, as Nakri arrived in the area on Monday with waves reaching up to nine meters on some coasts.

Municipal authorities announced Wednesday that they have begun the process of requesting assistance certificates from residents in order to claim public support in the event of natural disasters.

Those who wish to apply for housing assistance can go to city hall starting today and fill out the corresponding paperwork.
