The president explained that the initiative is inspired by similar programs successfully implemented in countries such as India and Brazil, which have offered free lunches to schoolchildren for years.
The head of State commented that the idea arose from his own observations during tours of rural and remote areas of the country, where he witnessed firsthand the effects of childhood nutritional insufficiency.
The program, considered one of the new government’s main social strategies, seeks to reduce malnutrition rates and strengthen human capital development, in addition to improving public health in the long term.
According to the official plan, the project’s coverage will include schoolchildren, young children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers, to consolidate a comprehensive social assistance model nationwide.
