Lula promotes social participation ahead of COP30 in Brazil

Brasilia, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will lead the opening of the event titled "Social Participation in the COP30 Action Agenda" to consolidate civil society contributions to the international climate debate.

The forum will be held at the Athos Bulcão Community Center at the University of Brasilia, with an eye toward the next major global climate event, to be held in November in Belém, capital of the northern state of Pará.

Organized by the General Secretariat of the Presidency, the meeting will bring together the Interconsular Forum and the Social Participation Forums of the Legal Amazon states, with the goal of strengthening Brazilian civil society contributions to the so-called Agenda for Action of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).

The meeting symbolizes the government’s effort to democratize the environmental debate and ensure that the voices of Amazonian communities, Indigenous peoples, youth organizations, and social movements are included in the proposals Brazil will present to the UN.

The Action Agenda is a strategic document that guides the measures needed to expand and accelerate compliance with the Paris Agreement commitments, while seeking to harmonize economic development and climate justice.

Its structure revolves around six thematic axes: Energy, Industry and Transport; Forests, Oceans and Biodiversity; Agriculture and Food Systems; Cities, Infrastructure and Water; Human and Social Development; and Cross-Cutting Issues, the latter linked to gender equality, inclusion, and a just transition.

The initiative is part of the preparations for COP30, the first global climate conference to be held in the heart of the Amazon, where more than 30,000 international delegates, heads of State, and civil society representatives are expected to participate.
