Japanese media stated that the date was set thanks to an agreement between the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP), the organizations with the largest number of seats in both houses of the National Assembly.
In early October, the LDP, Japan’s leading governing force, was forced to hold early elections and decide on replacing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned in September following his party’s poor election results.
This year, the LDP, in alliance with Komeito, lost a majority in both the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament.
After 26 years of partnership, the Buddhist Komeito party decided a week ago to sever its ties with the LDP after learning of the election of Sanae Takaichi as its new chief, due to her ultra-conservative political stance.
