Completion of judicial elections, a legislative challenge in Bolivia

La Paz, October 30 (Prensa Latina) Completing Bolivia's judicial elections is a challenge for the Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP), just 24 hours before the final ordinary session of the 2020-2025 legislature, an official source confirmed.

While ALP President David Choquehuanca convened the outgoing assembly members for their final session, the acting head of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Oscar Hassenteufel, urged the incoming deputies ano senators to “complete the 2024 judicial elections.”

“As all of Bolivia knows, a series of constitutional actions brought the process to a near standstill, and we were unable to complete those elections,” the official stated, referring to the judicial elections held in December 2024, which were only partially completed.

“I believe that the moment and the entire country will appreciate the task that both you and we can accomplish,” the interim president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) told the newly elected alternate deputies and senators, the day they received their credentials.

On December 15, 2024, Bolivia held its third judicial election in history, and the first partial one because, due to a court ruling, only 19 of the 26 authorities of the Judicial Branch and the Plurinational Constitutional Court (TCP) were elected.

Three members of the Council of the Magistracy (CM) and five magistrates of the Agro-Environmental Court (TA) were elected.

However, of the nine TCP magistrates, only four were elected (in Chuquisaca, La Paz, Oruro, and Potosi), and seven of the nine Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) magistrates were elected (in Chuquisaca, La Paz, Oruro, Potosi, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, and Tarija).

The election of five magistrates of the TCP (from Beni, Pando, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and Tarija) and two of the TSJ (from Beni and Pando) was then left pending.
