The Montevideo Teachers’ Association (Ademu) decided to suspend classes for the third day following violent incidents at a school in Jardines del Hipodromo neighborhood of this city.
The strike will last 24 hours, with a demonstration in front of the Executive Tower, followed by a march to the Legislative Palace, according to a decision by the Ademu Assembly.
This union action follows two days of strikes called by the union after the incidents in which teachers, parents, and children were attacked by a violent group.
Last Friday, a meeting was held between the union and the National Public Education Administration, in which increased security was demanded for schools, and the Ministry of the Interior promised to provide reinforcements.
Meanwhile, the Montevideo Secondary School Teachers Association (ADES) resolved in an assembly to call a 24-hour strike in secondary schools.
The protest comes as the Senate debates the government’s budget proposal, which the education sector considers insufficient.
