The meeting, which will run until Friday, aims to define priorities and starting points for the implementation of the 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development.
It also seeks to support the member states of Latin America and the Caribbean in incorporating transformative educational practices into their public policies, legislation, curricula, teacher training, and school management.
During the opening ceremony the importance of strengthening ties between ministries of education, specialized centers, universities, researchers, schools, youth, and civil society organizations was emphasized, with a view to consolidating a regional cooperation network that promotes education as a cornerstone of peace.
On behalf of Minister Luis Miguel de Camps, the Vice Minister of Technical and Pedagogical Services, Ancell Scheker, affirmed that the Dominican Republic reaffirms its commitment to Recommendation 2023, understanding that education “cannot be neutral in the face of current challenges, but rather an act of consciously building citizenship.”
She stated that, under the guidance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Ministry of Education reiterates its willingness to learn from regional experiences and to develop policies that translate this vision into tangible results.
