Brazil: Social movements attend Global Climate March

Belem, Brazil, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) Social movements and grassroots groups are participating in the so-called Global Climate March in the streets of Belem, coinciding with the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC-COP30).

The march also gathers members of the People’s Summit, and the COP of the Baixadas (an active network of organizations, artists, and community leaders), as well as organizations across all continents, and a strong representation from communities in the northern state of Para.

When the march concludes, a People’s Summit letter summarizing a series of demands, such as the demarcation of traditional territories and the need for financing for a just transition to a low-carbon economy, is expected to be published.

A call for effective actions for climate change adaptation and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions will also be included.

The organizers indicated that, after being held in recent years in countries with different political systems, COP30 in Belem marks a return to significant civil society participation.

Cultural activities, such as workshops to make banners and posters, giant inflatable puppets featuring members of the COP30 Committee, and the Visagento Procession, a symbolic parade of Para culture highlighting folkloric figures such as the Curupira, which serves as the guardian of the forest, are included during the march.
