According to the survey conducted by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) for La Tribune Dimanche, 76 percent of respondents expressed this concern, followed by the management of public finances, at 70 percent. Other prominent concerns among citizens include healthcare (66 percent), the cleanliness of their municipalities (66 percent), the fight against drugs (61 percent), and the level of local taxes (60 percent).
The survey itself points out that six out of ten French people are pleased with the performance of their mayor, while 38 percent said they were not, a result similar to that of other studies.
In this regard, IFOP Director General Frederic Dabi considered mayors to be a kind of “emergency responder for the Republic,” given the difficulties of national politics.
In next year’s municipal elections, which will follow those held in June 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, some 34,000 mayors and 600,000 council members will be elected.
