Climate debt erupts at COP30

Belem, Brazil, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) As COP30 draws to a close, the poorest countries are raising their voices to demand an increase in international funding to help them cope with the rising costs of climate adaptation.

Negotiators from the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) bloc are warning of the growing scarcity of resources reaching developing nations.

These countries need the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC-COP30) to demand more finincing to adapt to the impacts of global warming.

This message was conveyed by the LDC negotiating group, which comprises 44 nations.

Lina Yassin, representative of Sudan, affirmed, “The latest UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) report noted that the adaptation funding gap amounts to 310 billion dollars. Only 26 billion dollars had been allocated until 2023. This is nothing compared to the needs.”

One of the expected advances at this COP lies in the indicators for the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), a set of metrics that allows for a comparable measurement of how countries are preparing to face the impacts of the climate crisis.

This concept was created by the Paris Agreement, but in the 10 years since, progress on the issue has been slow.

The group of vulnerable countries wants the adaptation finance to be at least tripled by 2030, and the issue should not be relegated to a secondary position in favor of discussions on mitigation (reduction actions).
