Haiti asks UK for help to strengthen anti-gang fight

Port-au-Prince, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) Haitian Foreign Minister Jean Victor Jean-Baptiste requested assistance from the UK government to strengthen the fight against gangs in the Caribbean nation.

Jean-Baptiste was received by Jenny Chapman, Minister of State for International Development for Africa, at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The Haitian Foreign Minister requested London’s support in sending equipment and materials to continue combating armed gangs.

In response to the crisis in Haiti, the UK announced funding to support the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti (MSSI), led by Kenya, which has now been renamed the Gang Suppression Force.

British counterpart David Cameron emphasized the importance of the mission in strengthening the Haitian National Police and facilitating humanitarian assistance and development in the country.

The relationship between London and Port-au-Prince is characterized by bilateral trade, mutual investment, international cooperation, cultural exchange, politics, diplomacy and defense, tourism, art, and heritage.

The United Kingdom is one of Haiti’s main trading partners, importing products such as coffee, cocoa, clothing, and handicrafts, while Haiti has imported manufactured goods and services from the UK.
