Japan: Survivors slam over change in nuke principles

Tokyo, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) Survivors of the bombings in Japan protested for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's decision to review the principles prohibiting the possession of such weapons in the country. Most Hiroshima and Nagasaki victims, grouped in the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, expressed concern about the possibility raised by the new government of reversing its previous stance and initiating talks to review the principles concerning the possession, development, or introduction of nuclear weapons in Japan.

During a recent parliamentary session, Takaichi did not guarantee that the drawing up of the three nuclear principles would remain the same when she reviews them before 2026.

Nihon Hidankyo, who was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024, warned in a statement of the risk of modifying these political issues, as Japan could become a base for nuclear war or a target of nuclear attacks.

The humanitarian organization called to stage a demonstration on November 21 outside the House of Representatives’ office building to demand the Japanese government sign and ratify the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The United States’ decision to drop atomic bombs on the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, has been questioned for years by several historians.
