The meeting, chaired by Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren and his Peruvian counterpart, Hugo de Zela, took place after movements of people along the demarcation line, which the government describes as normal and the opposition as a crisis.
Both countries advocated for coordination mechanisms between the Chilean Carabineros and the Investigations Police (PDI) and the Peruvian National Police to facilitate joint actions and improved management of migration and border control.
The parties also agreed to hold a follow-up meeting of the Binational Committee on December 19 to review the agreements reached, according to a statement published on the Foreign Ministry’s website.
Last Friday, the Peruvian government declared a state of emergency on the border with Chile and announced a reinforcement of the military presence there to prevent a possible wave of migrants.
However, Chilean authorities dismissed the existence of a border crisis and stated that there is a specific and isolated problem between the Santa Rosa and Chacalluta border crossings due to people who were unable to cross into Peru.
“In terms of migration, there is no crisis, far from it,” stated Luis Eduardo Thayer, director of the National Migration Service.
