Uruguayan government seeks agreements in Wage Councils

Montevideo, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government is seeking to finalize most of the ongoing wage negotiations, announced the Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Juan Castillo.

The minister reported that 60 percent of these negotiating tables have already reached agreements.

In addition, other negotiations are in the drafting stage, which could bring the total to 75 percent of agreements underway, according to his prediction.

He acknowledged that obstacles persist in highly complex sectors, such as port activity, where talks remain stalled, and rural areas, for which the MTSS will have to present a new proposal for rapprochement.

He also mentioned the metalworking sector as one of the most challenging.

If the remaining agreements are not reached, the government anticipates that it will begin working this week on issuing decrees to establish wage adjustments in those cases where consensus cannot be achieved.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) aims to reach agreements in the wage councils to prevent as many sectors as possible from entering the new year without a defined wage structure, according to the website Ambito.
