In statements to Al-Masirah TV, Hamas leader Osama Hamdan affirmed that the reason for their weapons is the Israeli occupation.
He accused the United States of attempting to impose its hegemony in the Middle East and of using Israel for that purpose.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that the essence of the American project is based on disarming the region as part of a strategy to build Greater Israel, he stated.
The deputy secretary general of Islamic Jihad, Muhammad al-Hindi, echoed this sentiment, rejecting the surrender of weapons and accusing Netanyahu of violating the ceasefire in effect since October 10 in the coastal enclave.
In an interview with the Qatari television network Al Jazeera, al-Hindi asserted that Qatar does not want to move forward to the second phase of the truce agreement.
“The weapons belong to the Palestinian people, not to the factions,” the Islamist group leader declared.
However, he announced that “we are showing flexibility with the mediators regarding a truce with the occupation (Israel), a freeze on the use of weapons, or the absence of armed demonstrations.”
Both Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump have repeatedly demanded the disarmament of Palestinian militias as a condition for moving to a new phase in the Gaza Strip, devastated after two years of aggression.
Hamas agreed to relinquish power there, which it has held since 2007, but flatly refused to surrender its weapons, linking that possibility to the end of the occupation and the creation of a nation-state.

Ramala, 24 dic (Prensa Latina) El Movimiento de Resistencia Islámica (Hamas) y la Yihad Islámica reiteraron hoy su negativa a desarmarse en la Franja de Gaza al reivindicar su lucha contra la ocupación israelí y defender la creación de un Estado palestino.
En declaraciones a Al-Masirah TV, Osama Hamdan, dirigente de Hamas, afirmó que la razón de las armas es la ocupación israelí.
Acusó a Estados Unidos de intentar imponer su hegemonía en Oriente Medio y de utilizar a Israel para ese objetivo.

En similar sentido se pronunció el secretario general adjunto de la Yihad Islámica, Muhammad al-Hindi, quien rechazó la entrega de las armas y acusó a Netanyahu de no respetar el alto el fuego, vigente desde el 10 de octubre en el enclave costero.
En una entrevista con la televisora qatarí Al Jazeera, al-Hindi consideró que ese país no quiere avanzar a la segunda fase del acuerdo de tregua.
Las armas pertenecen al pueblo palestino y no a las facciones, expresó el dirigente del grupo islamista.
Sin embargo, anunció que “mostramos flexibilidad con los mediadores respecto a una tregua con la ocupación (Israel), una congelación (del uso) de las armas o la ausencia de manifestaciones armadas”.
Tanto Netanyahu como el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, reclamaron en varias oportunidades el desarme de las milicias palestinas como condición para pasar a una nueva etapa en la Franja de Gaza, devastada tras dos años de agresión.
Hamas aceptó entregar el poder allí, que mantiene desde 2007, pero rechazó de plano entregar las armas al vincular esa posibilidad al fin de la ocupación y a la creación de un estado nacional.
