“This is how Honduras wakes up, with an electoral coup underway and an illegal National Electoral Council (CNE) comprised of two (out of a total of three) magistrates, moving towards declaring a ‘de facto president-elect,’” Reina stated on his social media account.
The vice-presidential candidate for the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre) in the recent election alluded to the attempt by electoral magistrates Ana Hall and Cossette Lopez to move towards the official declaration of the elections without completing the vote count.
In a plenary session held Tuesday night, Hall and Lopez, from the right-wing Liberal and National (PN) parties, respectively, dismissed the challenges to some 10,000 tally sheets with inconsistencies, as demanded by Libre council member Marlon Ochoa.
“I withdraw and disassociate myself from any imprescriptible crime. I expressly state that I will not sign any act classified as a crime.” “I did not cast any vote, so I am not responsible for this crime,” Ochoa emphasized, adding that she left the plenary session and filed a complaint with the Prosecutor’s Office.
In his statement, Reina accused the magistrates of the so-called two-party system of bypassing “all legal procedures without due diligence in addressing all legal appeals filed, violating due electoral process and the law.”
In his opinion, the more votes were counted in the special recount, the more evident the manipulation became, which is why the two council members agreed to halt the count, he emphasized.
