Gas supply to Syria from Jordan resumes

Amman, Apr 22 (Prensa Latina) Natural gas supply to Syria has been resumed from Jordan at a rate of 70 million cubic feet per day, the Director General of Jordan's National Electric Power Company, Sufian Batayneh, announced.

In statements to the state-run Al-Mamlaka television network, Batayneh explained that the flow was restored under a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening Syria’s energy supply.

The Syrian Ministry of Energy confirmed that the resumption of gas supply had an immediate impact on the national electricity grid, allowing for the first time in years a continuous 24-hour electricity service in some areas.

The Minister of Energy, Mohammad al-Bashir, noted in a message posted on the social media platform X that, along with maintenance work and balanced consumption management, a significant improvement is being observed in most governorates.

However, he specified that difficulties persist in regions of the east and south of the country, where repair work continues on substations and transmission lines to ensure greater service stability.

Gas is supplied through the infrastructure of the port of Aqaba, in southern Jordan, where liquefied natural gas is received, regasified, and transported via the Arab Gas Pipeline to Syrian power plants.

Although the exact date of the previous interruption was not specified, reports state that the flow experienced technical fluctuations during the first half of April, coinciding with comprehensive maintenance work on the network.

Since the beginning of January 2026, Jordan has been supplying gas to Syria in volumes ranging from 30 to 90 million cubic feet per day, as part of an agreement aimed at mitigating the country’s energy shortage.
