Cuba to address treponematoses infections

Havana, May 13 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Health Network announced that the diagnosis of syphilis and other treponematoses will be addressed in the Caribbean country on May 20 and 21.

As part of the global strategy, a workshop will be held to provide an update on these infectious diseases and propose actions to interrupt transmission.

Despite being preventable and treatable, treponematoses remain a problem in many regions due to factors such as poverty, limited access to medical care, and a lack of awareness.

This group of infectious diseases, caused by bacteria of the genus Treponema, includes venereal syphilis, yaws, pinta, and bejel (endemic syphilis), the Cuban Health Network statement specifies.

Venereal syphilis is considered the prototype of a sexually transmitted infection and is the most important both for its frequency and its historical and social implications.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 12 million new cases occur annually worldwide, two million of them in pregnant women, resulting in complications for both mother and fetus in 80 percent of cases.

The situation regarding other treponematoses varies by region, and efforts are underway to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these diseases, which is essential to reducing their impact on vulnerable populations and moving toward their eradication.
