An article published on the website of the newspaper La Repubblica indicates that this motion, approved on June 18 by the European Parliament, “constitutes a further example of political duplicity and the subordination of European foreign policy to pressure” from the United States.
The article refers to an analysis by activist Tonio Dell’Olio, published in the latest issue of the magazine Mosaico di Pace, who considers this initiative, promoted by far-right MEPs, to be “an explicit denial of reality, viewed from a distance and with a biased ideological perspective.”
It is impossible to address Cuba’s economic problems “without mentioning the historical responsibility of the US blockade, which for more than sixty years has had a devastating impact on the island’s economy, healthcare, and daily life, directly affecting the civilian population,” the text points out.
“Those who voted in favor of the condemnation were careful not to meet with the Cuban doctors who support the Calabrian healthcare system, much less participate, even minimally, in the daily hardship caused by the blockade.”
In his critique of the resolution published in Mosaico di Pace, cited by the newspaper La Repubblica, Dell’Olio states that it is unbelievable that it denies the serious consequences of the US economic, commercial, and financial blockade, and emphasizes the importance of “an autonomous European foreign policy.”
The analyst believes that, for the development of a regional policy on this issue, “we need coherence, not propaganda,” the source adds.
