China denounces US judicial move against Raul Castro

Beijing, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) China rejected the use of judicial measures to pressure Cuba and reiterated its support for the country’s sovereignty, following the issuance of an arrest warrant for historic leader Raul Castro by US authorities.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that “Comrade Raul Castro is a Cuban revolutionary leader who is revered and widely respected internationally.”

She noted that Beijing has taken note of the responses from Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, both of whom described the move as a “pathetic circus.”

China opposes the abusive use of judicial measures to exert pressure on Cuba and firmly supports the Caribbean nation in defending its national sovereignty and rejecting external interference, Mao affirmed.

Furthermore, she urged Washington to immediately end the blockade and any other form of coercion or pressure against the island, and to cease violating the Cuban people’s right to live and develop.

These statements follow the issuance of a new arrest warrant by a Miami judge, related to the February 1996 downing of two aircraft belonging to the organization “Brothers to the Rescue” (Hermanos al Rescate).

Announced by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, this measure adds to previous legal proceedings initiated in the United States against the historic Cuban leader and other Cuban citizens regarding those events.

Last May, Cuba rejected a federal indictment linked to the same case, asserting that Washington lacks both the jurisdiction and the legitimacy to prosecute matters concerning the defense of national sovereignty. Havana’s official position maintains that the aircraft involved repeatedly violated Cuban airspace, and it notes that, for years, the country’s authorities had lodged complaints regarding these incursions with US bodies and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
