The CGIL report, entitled “NiNi, between inequalities and gaps. In search of new public policies”, was carried out on the basis of data provided by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) and the ActionAid International NGO.

Back in 2020, some three million Italians between the said ages fell into the NEET category (not in education, employment, or training). 1.7 million of them were women, and the current situation is similar, the study indicates.

It shows a critical situation in the south of the country, where 39 percent of young people are unemployed, while 23.0 percent in the center are affected; 20.0% in the northwest and 18.0% percent in the north.

Labor inactivity affects 32.0 percent of high school graduates and 36.3 percent of the unemployed, have been looking for work for more than a year, although almost 50.0 percent had previous jobs experience, the report states.

56.0 percent of NEETs are women and another 20.0 percent are inactive mothers, “which is related to gender disparity in care burdens, which prevent or suggest women stay out or drop out of the job market,” adds the source.
