Syria strengthens its energy security with Azerbaijani gas

Damascus, Aug 3 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir stated on Sunday that the regional gas pipeline connecting Syria with Azerbaijan through Turkiye marks a strategic milestone in the Syrian government's efforts to strengthen its energy security.

Al-Bashir underscored that the project will allow for the daily supply of up to six million cubic meters of natural gas, which will significantly increase national electricity generation.

The Syrian energy minister expressed that this project represents a strategic step to ensure the country’s energy stability.

Furthermore, it will allow for the expansion of our power plants, with a direct impact on the economy, services, and the return of displaced persons to their homes.

Gas pumping began on Saturday at the Kara Mazraa station, located on the Syrian-Turkish border, north of Aleppo province.

Al-Bashir noted that the first phase of the project involves the supply of approximately 3.4 million cubic meters per day, with financial support from Qatar through the Qatar Fund for Development.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar described the project as “a symbol of the Turkish-Syrian friendship in the energy sector” and estimated that annual gas exports to Syria could reach two billion cubic meters, enough to cover the energy needs of about five million households.
