Colombia seeks to boost energy production through hydrogen

Bogota, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) Colombia is currently seeking to boost energy production through low-emission hydrogen with 36 projects underway, under construction, and operational, distributed across the Caribbean, Andean, and Pacific regions.

In order to make true, representatives of companies, associations, and government officials recently met and defended the need to strengthen the legal framework for the use of this source.

Regarding the topic, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Edwin Palma, considered that the ambitions in this sector align with the national government’s commitments to the global energy transition, and put Colombia on the path to positioning itself as a key strategic ally for the European Union.

“We are working to promote regulatory measures so that hydrogen produced in our territory is considered low-emission; another is to define the requirements and conditions for the implementation of white hydrogen projects,” he stated.

He added that they are also seeking to establish provisions for Agents in the Hydrogen Value Chain and create the Intersectoral Commission for the Governance of Hydrogen and/or its derivatives.

Currently, the state-owned company Ecopetrol is advancing the Coral project, which consists of the construction of the largest green hydrogen plant in Latin America, located at the Cartagena Refinery.

Once completed, it will produce approximately 800 tons of green hydrogen annually using a five-megawatt electrolyzer and water and electricity.
