A statement from the Executive Committee of the PCU “points out its strongest condemnation of a new threat and aggression from the US imperialism on our continent.”
The statement says the US Armed Forces have positioned, in the last few hours, three guided-missile destroyers, submarines, airplanes, helicopters, and about 4,000 marines near Venezuelan territorial waters.
It considers that such actions, under the pretext of fighting transnational organized crime, “represent an unjustified military escalation that generates a scenario of high regional instability and has the potential to trigger a war in Latin America.”
The Uruguayan communists called on the international community and the nations of the region to repudiate these provocations, defend themselves against any form of interventionism, and demand respect for the declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, adopted in 2014.
