Brazil’s Supreme Court reinforces security for Bolsonaro trial

Brasilia, Sept 1 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's Supreme Court (STF) has reinforced its security ahead of the start of the trial against former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other allies, members of the so-called core of the coup attempt.

The group is accused of leading the plot that sought to violently abolish the democratic rule of law after the 2022 general elections.

To ensure security during the sessions (September 2), the STF expanded its police structure, adopting special measures inside and outside the courthouse in Brasilia. A group of officers remains in the court building, even at night, to prevent incidents.

In addition, routine operations are being carried out at the justices’ residences, a procedure intensified since November, when a man detonated a bomb in front of the Supreme Court which claimed his life.

The Federal District Public Security Secretariat (SSPDF) announced that surveillance will be reinforced in Plaza de los Tres Poderes, with special attention to the access roads (S1 and S2).

According to the department, surveillance could include arrests and backpack searches in suspicious situations, in compliance with the higher court ruling prohibiting camping and obstructing the area.

So far, there is no evidence of demonstrations related to the Bolsonaro trial, and given that the main group’s lawsuit will coincide this year with the September 7 Independence Day holiday, the court indicated that it has a “structured plan for all large demonstrations,” developed in conjunction with the SSPDF.
