Brazilian Police to investigate Bolsonaro for COVID-19 management

Brasilia, Sept 18 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Flavio Dino handed in a request from the Federal Police (PF) and ordered an investigation into the conduct of former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dino’s decision is based on the final report of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the virus, presented in 2021.

The Attorney General’s Office requested the Supreme Federal Court to close the investigations in 2022.

At the time, Deputy Federal Prosecutor Lindora Maria de Araujo stated that there was no evidence to justify opening an investigation. However, the PF requested access to the evidence and concluded that it was necessary to continue the investigation.

Dino agreed with the law enforcement agency’s request, noting that the ICC found evidence of bid rigging, overbilling, embezzlement of public funds, and other illegal acts.

The ICC’s final Covid report charged Bolsonaro with nine crimes: malfeasance, charlatanism, an epidemic resulting in death, violation of preventive health measures, irregular use of public funds, as well as incitement to commit a crime, falsification of private documents, criminal liability, and crimes against humanity.

The Permanent People’s Tribunal convicted Bolsonaro on September 1 of crimes against humanity during the pandemic.

According to the court, he committed two illegal acts. First, a serious violation of human rights by publicly inciting such an offense against broad sectors of the population who are discriminated against, according to the text of the verdict heard at the University of Sao Paulo Law School.
