Agriculture is considered essential for Africa’s survival

Addis Ababa, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) Digital agriculture is no longer optional, but essential for Africa's survival and prosperity, African Union Commission (AUC) Deputy Chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi stated in an event m the field.

Speaking at the Inaugural Conference on Digital Agriculture in Africa, being held from December 1 to 3 at the headquarters of the continental organization, Haddadi underscored the commitment to leveraging technology for the transformation of the sector and sustainable development.

The AUC deputy chief specified that the theme of the conference, “Shaping Agricultural Policy for Africa’s Future: Innovation, Climate-Smart Practices, and Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development,” underscores the importance of designing regulations that incorporate future innovations.

They also called for boosting practices that support the transformation of agri-food systems across the continent.

She added, “Agriculture is the backbone of our continent. It sustains more than 60 percent of our population, contributes significantly to national economies, and remains fundamental to Africa’s development.” Ethiopia’s State Minister of Agriculture Efa Muleta, in turn, noted that the transformation of agriculture firmly reflects Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s vision.

Muleta called for collaboration among governments, the private sector, and international partners to ensure broad access to digital resources.
