US House of Representatives has a member on sight

Washington, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) Skirts and romance are the ingredients that spice up a new political scandal threatening Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, with accusations against one of its members, Tony Gonzales.

The controversy surrounding the Texas representative intensified after allegations surfaced that he had an affair with a staff member who later committed suicide.

These revelations have led several members of the Republican Party to demand his resignation or that he suspend his reelection campaign before the start of the primaries next week.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson, stated that, although the allegations are “very serious,” independent investigations are necessary before taking any action.

The Congressional Conduct Office will send a report on Gonzales to the House Ethics Committee. According to the House code of conduct, its members are prohibited from having sexual relations with its staff.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said he hopes the process moves quickly so that “the facts come out,” according to local media reports.

For Republicans, who hold a slim majority in the House, each vacancy or defection can affect key votes, increasing political pressure there.
