EU threatens to withdraw funds from countries cooperating with Russia

Brussels, May 19 (Prensa Latina) The EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, warned that countries cooperating with Russia and Iran will be deprived of EU funding, the newspaper Le Soir reported.

According to the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, if a member state supports Moscow or Tehran, “it must show flexibility so that we can restructure our interaction.”

Kallas did not specify what these “flexible conditions” would entail, amid Brussels’ attempts to design a €300 billion investment strategy under the “Global Gateway” program for the seven-year budget.

The warning comes after Kallas herself complained that the European Commission is failing to curb Russia’s growing influence on the continent.

Political analysts consulted in Brussels point out that the declaration lacks concrete implementation mechanisms, making it more of a symbolic gesture than an enforceable policy, given that many partner states maintain trade ties with Russia.

International relations experts believe this stance reflects growing European frustration with the failure of total isolationism against Moscow, and warn that financial threats could push countries in the Global South toward alternative alliances with China or the BRICS group.

Local media previously described Kallas as part of “the worst leadership in Brussels in decades,” due to her anti-Russian obsession that affects her judgment on other issues, while the Estonian politician has been ridiculed for her blind rhetoric against the Kremlin.
