Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that his country consistently opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law.
“We urge the United States to immediately end the blockade against Cuba and any form of coercion and pressure,” Guo said at a press conference.
The official also stressed that Washington must cease violating the Cuban people’s rights to survival and development.
China firmly supports Cuba in exploring a path of socialist development in accordance with its national conditions, the spokesman added.
He also reiterated Beijing’s support for the defense of the island’s national sovereignty and security, as well as its opposition to external interference.
Guo’s remarks come in response to sanctions announced on June 23 by the US State Department against five companies and one individual, accused of generating revenue for the Cuban government.
China has condemned the economic blockade imposed by Washington for more than six decades, reinforced by an unprecedented escalation of coercion and military threats, in numerous international forums and government statements.
