Russia develops collagen films for corneal restoration

Moscow, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) Russian scientists have developed an effective method for creating collagen films for culturing corneal cells, the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported.

Scientists from the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute proposed an accessible and effective method for creating collagen matrices (scaffolds) that can be used for corneal cell transplantation, according to a report published this Sunday by the RIA Novosti news agency.

This breakthrough could have potential applications in regenerative therapies for the eyes, the statement noted.

Researchers observed the interaction between cells and the resulting films and discovered that pre-cooling the collagen substrate stimulates cell migration.

Yulia Nashchekina, head of the tissue engineering group at the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted that the implanted films promote cell proliferation on the surface and active movement from the wound edges, thereby accelerating healing.

The study was funded by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, RIA Novosti reported.
