Lula supports investigation into his son, rejects special treatment

Brasilia, Aug 24 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inio Lula da Silva stated that his son, Fabio Luis Lula da Silva, must answer to the justice system regarding any potential irregularities, and he rejected any attempt to obstruct the investigations.

In an interview with the Record network, the president maintained that everyone is obliged to act properly and that suspicions must be investigated, regardless of who is involved.

“My son knows that if he makes a mistake, he will be tried, punished, or acquitted. But he has to prove his innocence,” he asserted.

Thus, the leader rejected any political privilege for his eldest son, who is the subject of three inquiries regarding alleged influence-peddling schemes and possible benefits granted to companies linked to dealings with the federal government.

These investigations were authorized by the Supreme Federal Court and are being overseen by Justices Andre Mendonca and Flavio Dino.

The defense teams for those involved deny the allegations of wrongdoing and question the public disclosure of details from the inquiries.

“I am not a president who tries to ban investigations. I do not threaten to dismiss justices. I do not threaten to punish police officers,” the president added—remarks interpreted by the local press as a reference to former President Jair Bolsonaro.

During the interview, in which Lula reiterated his support for the inquiries to proceed, the head of state insisted that it is up to the Federal Police and the justice system to clarify the facts and determine any potential liability.
