African Federation recognizes Ethiopia’s progress in healthcare

Addis Ababa, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) The Federation of African Medical Students' Associations (FAMSA) commended Ethiopia's progress in healthcare at a meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for Africa, whose sessions continue in this capital on Thursday.

FAMSA President Yusuf Auwal Yahya told the Ethiopian News Agency that Ethiopian Health Minister Mekdes Daba’s speech at the meeting, particularly the maternal and child health outcomes, demonstrates tangible progress.

Yahya noted that Daba’s outstanding aspects reflected ongoing efforts to improve health services and strengthen the system’s capacity to respond to the needs of the population.

Daba revealed on Tuesday that Addis Ababa has made progress in expanding the capacity of its health sector, and the domestic market share of locally manufactured medicines and health products has increased from eight to 44 percent.

Addressing the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held from August 24 to 28, the health minister emphasized the country’s strategic focus on local production and self-sufficiency as fundamental pillars of national health security.

The WHO Regional Committee for Africa will assess progress toward regional health goals and discuss new strategies and resolutions.
