Participants made these remarks in an online meeting commemorating the 100th birthday of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, coordinated by Yamila Martinez, economic and commercial advisor at the Cuban Embassy in this nation.

Joel Leal, a graduate of the Agrarian University of Havana, said the anniversary provides an opportunity to “return the favor to Cuba” with young people from other countries and those educated there.

From the Pan de Azucar community sports center in the department of Maldonado, Lucia Escandel, a graduate of the International School of Sports and Physical Education, joined the dialogue.

Escandel stressed the importance of the meeting and underscored that both the institution that trained her and the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) resulted from “Fidel Castro’s deeply humanistic and compassionate spirit.”

Dr. Valeria Machado, in turn, expressed her gratitude for “the opportunity to have received excellent medical training, but above all, training grounded in humanist, solidarity-based, and internationalist values.”

Cuban Ambassador to this nation, Lisset Perez, sent a message in which she described the Uruguayans welcome to her country as “living proof of Fidel Castro’s project to train outstanding professionals with a profound sense of solidarity and humanism.”
