According to the Ombudsman, Iris Marin, one of the injured is a member of the security forces who was mutilated as a result of the car bomb explosion.

Local media outlets report that the attack resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Venezuelan citizen.

Caracol Radio specified that the attack, which occurred late last night, also caused serious damage to several businesses and homes.

The governor of Norte de Santander, William Villamizar, told the same news platform that he expects the support of the entire National Police and that the Security Council will meet in the coming hours to adopt new measures in response to the incident.

The human rights defender further argued after the attack that humanitarian law was not created to legitimize objectives, but to minimize harm, especially when such harm is indiscriminate and affects civilians and property.

Several armed groups operate in the department of Santander, including the National Liberation Army (ELN), the Gulf Clan, the Self-Defense Forces of the Sierra Nevada (AUC), historically known as “Los Pachenca,” and remnants of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP).
