El Siglo, one of Chile’s oldest newspapers, turns 86

Santiago, Chile, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) El Siglo (The Century), one of Chile's oldest weekly newspapers, is celebrating its 86th anniversary, thanks to the commitment of generations of journalists and staff who have worked for its pages, its director, Hugo Guzman, said.

Dozens of colleagues and media representatives from Chile and abroad attended Monday evening’s anniversary celebration at the Cafeteria Popular in Yungay neighborhood of Santiago.

Guzman remembered that El Siglo took on the challenge of communication during a time of social upheaval, when unionism was emerging, transformative ideas were taking root, popular and leftist parties were emerging, and the nation was consolidating rights and democratic progress.

The publication also played a defining role in the so-called Operation Truth during the government of former President Salvador Allende, survived two dictatorial periods, suffered repression, persecution, and went underground.

“El Siglo is not, and has never been, an aseptic newspaper; it is a media with a commitment, and it does not hide it,” its director said, and remembered that the publication expresses an editorial line committed to transformative ideals, leftist positions, workers, Latin Americanism, and popular processes.
